Politics and Press In Modern Britain

Friday 13th December

Connotations:

  • We assume that the newspapers are sometimes made up of lies, simply due the lexis and the fact the typography includes logos of famous newspapers.
  • It is conveyed that newspapers are owned by billionaires, which is again conveyed by the lexis.
The motivation behind the image is to try and get people to vote for who they want to vote for in the general election, rather than letting the newspapers influence their vote.

The Guardian/Observer
  • This newspaper supports Labour
  • They are owned by The Scott Trust limited
The Telegraph
  • This newspaper supports the Conservatives
  • They are owned by David and Frederick Barley
The Independent
  • The Independent is unbiased when it comes to British politics
  • They newspaper is owned by Independent News and Media
The Daily Mail
  • The mail tends to sway towards the Conservatives
  • The newspaper is owned by DMG Media
The Express
  • Since 2005 the newspaper has supported conservatives
  • It is owned by Richmond Desmond
The Sun
  • The Sun currently support the Conservatives
  • It is owned by the News Group Newspapers
Exam Question: How is the media language used on the covers to make the reader either trust or mistrust the Conservatives?

Firstly, the Sun newspaper makes the reader mistrust the Conservatives as it conveys them to be a party full of politicians who don't know what they are doing. The Daily Express makes the reader trust the Conservatives, as it conveys that the Conservatives are the only party to save Britain.

Imagery
Mise en scene
Lexis and typography

Firstly, both newspapers, use Mise En Scene in the main image to either make the reader trust or mistrust the Conservatives. The facial expression of David Cameron in the The Sun newspaper is one of frustration, this is and index sign with signifies that the Conservatives don't really know what they are doing, the party is frustrated as what they are trying to do is not going to plany. However in the Daily Express newspaper, the use of the Mise En Scene in the main image makes the reader trust the Conservatives. The facial expression of Theresa May is one of confidence, this is an index sign which signifies that the Conservatives are confident in what they are doing, May is happy in the photo which connotes that everything is going well.

Todorov's Narrative Theory

Wednesday 8th October   Todorov's Narrative Theory Introduction: Todorov's theory is that there is a specific structure which most films, books and mostly anything with a storyline will use, especially in TV Dramas. The five aspects of Todorov's theory are the equilibrium where everything is in order, a disruption where someone or something causes order to be lost, recognition of disruption where the protagonist is affected by or realises the disruption, attempt to fix disruption by the protagonist and then new equilibrium where order is restored in a different way.  His theory goes especially well with TV Dramas, as the include multiple uses of disruptions (a stage in Todorov's theory). This theory is very useful, however it has it's restrictions in TV Drama as they usually want the audience to be lead on and thinking about multiple disruptions. How this applies to Homelands: Equilibrium - CIA agent Carrie Mathison is doing her job in Baghdad Disrupt...
